What is argon?

Argon is a colourless and odourless Noble gas. Along with helium and other gases, Noble gases exhibit great stability and extremely low reaction rates. In addition to this, argon’s properties make it non-flammable and non-corrosive.

What is argon used for?

Welding

Argon is most used within the welding industry as it provides an atmosphere in which welded metals such as carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium will not oxidise. Our pure argon canister is ideal for this use as it forms a protective bubble or umbrella of gas over the metal you’re working on. This will protect your metal against exposure to oxygen (which causes oxidisation) and corrosion.

Healthcare Industry

Argon gas is used vastly within the medical and healthcare industry. Within this industry, argon gas is used to:

Treat retinal detachment and retinal phototherapy for diabetics.
Used in surgery to weld arteries and destroy tumours.
Assists in the treatment of kidney tumours.
Is used to help treat heart arrhythmias.

Lighting

Argon can also be found within neon tubes in lighting and fluorescent lighting. When electricity travels through argon it gives off a purple/blue glow. Furthermore, it is great at saving money as when it charges it emits light at a much lower voltage. Argon is used in fluorescent lighting to prevent oxidisation which in turn prolongs the life of the lightbulb.

Food and Drink Industry

Another common use of argon is within the food and drink industry. Argon can be added to wine barrels to protect wine from becoming sour and oxidising. As it is denser than air, argon settles above the wine. It is also used in this way on a smaller scale in open wine and liquid bottles.

Double Glazing

Perhaps its most broad use, argon gas can be found within double-glazed windows and doors! Argon fills the space between two panes of glass to add more thermal and energy efficiency to homes across the UK.

Cylinder Sizes and Mixes

All our cylinders are filled to 200-bar ensuring excellent value for money, look out as many suppliers only fill the cylinders to 130-bar meaning you lose out! Our new or refillable argon gas canister variants are supplied in 10 and 20-litre bottles. We fill our own cylinders, we can fill any mix required for specialist applications. We supply:

Pure Argon – Mainly used for Aluminium and Stainless Steel.

Argomix 5% – Mainly used for Car Bodywork/Steel to 5mm.

Argomix 15% – Mainly used as above for thicker plates/over 5mm.

We will save you money by charging a returnable deposit of much less than one year’s cylinder rental charged by many other argon suppliers. Once you have paid your deposit, you will only ever pay the fill cost. When you no longer require the cylinder you can return it. Then, we will refund a percentage of the deposit based on the length of time you have kept the cylinder.
